A sunny Clean Up in February

We were lucky with the weather on the February Clean Up day organised by our Environment Group on Thursday 20th February. The grey clouds soon cleared so we had blue sky, sunshine and warmth most of the time.

We started picking up the litter on and around the Foundry Lane car park, and found some daffodils when we cleared the food bags and paper cups. Then three more volunteers joined us (including two of the youngest) as we headed uphill to the pathway that runs through the feet of the Metro viaduct. There was plenty of rubbish to keep us all busy, and some trimming back of the thorny and prickly branches growing out over the path. We were surprised to find purple crocuses flowering.

Our youngest volunteers were great at finding odd things that had been chucked or blown into the woodland by the path, including a bicycle tyre and tyre-less wheels.

Some of our volunteers finished at lunchtime, and some stayed for lunch (delicious lentil and veg soup at Ouseburn Farm). We headed back up to the path through the Metro viaduct to trim back more thorny branches and pick up lots more rubbish, including cans, bottles, and broken bottles. There were lots of small birds in the trees watching what we were doing.

We ended up with a pile of bags of rubbish (about two dozen) – and left a much cleaner path and woodland for people, animals and birds to enjoy. We look forward to welcoming more volunteers at our next Clean Up day on Saturday 15th March 2014!

Tidy Up Ouseburn events in October 2013

The next of Ouseburn Futures Environment Group’s valley tidy ups is on Saturday 19th October.

Volunteers are always warmly welcomed! We can provide tools, gloves – and a free lunch at Ouseburn Farm (usually delicious vegetable soup). We advise wearing clothes and footwear that can cope with sharp things (such as thorns and broken glass) and wet or muddy conditions. The weather should be dry this weekend (according the weather forecast) but the ground will probably remain quite soggy.

This Saturday, the tasks could include:

  • Litter picking on and around the steps (above the culvert).
  • Trimming the hawthorn (and stuff) under the metro viaduct.
  • Pulling nettles and sawing buddleia from the riverside walk.

Meet us outside Ouseburn Farm entrance at 10.30am. We finish at 3.30pm and usually take a lunch break around 1pm. If you only have a couple of hours to spare, do join us just for the morning or afternoon.

Our Tidy Up earlier in October

We had glorious weather for our Environment Group’s early October Ouseburn Tidy Up on Tuesday 8th October. We were grateful for help from one of the Newcastle City Council wardens who also gave us a safety talk at the start of the day and brought tools for us to borrow.

We started by tackling the Steps to Nowhere, off Lime Street, which had become overgrown during the summer. We weeded nettles, small brambles and other plants from the joints in the steps, and pruned back nettles, huge brambles, and blackthorn from the sides.

After big bowls of vegetable soup for lunch at Ouseburn Farm, the remaining team went up to the short stretch of path between Elizabeth Street and the first junction (the steps down to the path under the Metro viaduct). They cleaned up a mountain of cider bottles and a thicket of needles (using a proper sharps box for safe disposal).
