Our Clean & Green Ouseburn project starts in October 2014 and will continue through the winter and into early spring 2015. We have funding from the Local Environment Action Fund (LEAF) to train volunteers in environmental management skills and to carry improvements to the green spaces in Ouseburn. We aim to encourage greater bio-diversity, to help combat climate change, and to create new habitats for flora and fauna.
We are concentrating on specific areas of the valley on different days, and you are very welcome to come to just one or two events – or to all of them.
The Stepneys is the green area behind Stepney Bank – behind the former Northumbria Daybreak building and Ouseburn Trust car parks – and up to Stepney Rd. This area is overgrown, full of rubbish, and forms a barrier to the fields, pond, orchard, and woodland beyond.
You can help in thinning the vegetation, clearing rubbish and creating two new entrances and footpaths through here into the green spaces and to link with the footpaths by the fields, along the river, up to the City Stadium.
The initial session on Tuesday 28th October, 10am to 12 noon and/or 1pm to 3pm, will be an initial scoping of the task and some rubbish clearance. Future sessions for this area will be arranged later.
What do we provide? All tools, equipment and guidance – and a free lunch.
What do you need to bring? Warm clothes suitable for outdoor work (layers are good), waterproofs, and boots (preferably with a steel toe cap).
When is it? The initial Stepneys sessions are on Tuesday 28th October 2014 from 10am to 12 noon and/or 1pm to 3pm.
