DIY Streets September update

Many thanks to all those who came along to Ouseburn Farm to view the draft plans and leave comments, we’ll feed your views into the review process. We’ve also had comments from Living Streets (the national charity for pedestrians) and the Newcastle Cycling Campaign, which have been supportive and included some useful suggestions for improvements.

The draft plans and all the comments are now with the Council who are looking at the technical details and working out what everything will cost. When these designs are complete we will display them in the Farm and organise some open meetings so that you can give us your feedback.

We’re still hoping to run a street trial on Stepney Bank to see if it could operate one-way. This could create a better entrance to the Valley, improve footpath links down from the bus-stops and nearby homes and spread parking spaces out a bit more along the street.

The idea is to run the trial over two days, a Friday and a Saturday. We’ll be trying out one-way down initially as this was the preferred option when we spoke to local businesses, and it still allows direct access from New Bridge Street. We don’t have a date for the trial yet as the Council need to arrange permissions, but we’ll be visiting businesses on Stepney Bank and Stepney Road over the next few weeks to explain more about the plans and see what people think.
